Hispanic Studies Major
In order to ensure a well-balanced program, no student may apply more than 12 credits towards the major in any one semester, whether on campus or abroad. No more than 8 credits for upper division courses transferred from another U.S. institution can be applied to the major.
Courses in literature in translation may not be counted toward a major or minor.

Targeted electives consist of courses with content related to the cultures, geographies, societies of the Spanish speaking world that may be taught in English and may carry other designations (HISP, LLAS, POLS, SOAN, THEO, HIST). Students may also fulfill these 4 credits with a HISP elective taught in Spanish.

Some students will have 2 additional credits due to odd combinations of courses transferred from abroad. If not, students may take an additional HISP 360 section for 2 credits to reach the required total of 40 credits..
- 4
All majors are required to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country. Students who are unable, for whatever reason, to participate in a semester-long study abroad program or an embedded program, can fulfill this requirement through an internship only with the approval of the department chair.
